What is an Audit Trail?
An audit trail is a chronological, tamper-evident record of all activities, events, and transactions within a system, process, or organization. It captures who did what, when, and from where — creating a verifiable chain of evidence reviewable by auditors, management, and regulators.
Audit trails typically record:
- User actions: who initiated, approved, or modified a transaction
- Timestamps: the exact date and time of each action
- System events: logins, configuration changes, data modifications
- Transaction data: original values, changes made, and final state
How it works
Every action touching a financial record — a journal entry posted, an invoice approved, a vendor bank detail changed — is logged automatically and stored in a way that cannot be altered without detection. Modern ERPs (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) generate audit trails natively. Audit analytics platforms extract and analyze these trails across 100% of transactions, surfacing anomalies that periodic manual review would miss.
Why it matters for finance & audit teams
SOX Section 404
External auditors rely on audit trails to verify that key controls operated as designed. See: SOX compliance for internal auditors.
FCPA and Sapin II
Incomplete or altered records are standalone violations — the compliance solution must produce continuous evidence, not year-end snapshots.
Fraud investigations
The audit trail is the primary forensic evidence source. Related: financial data anomaly detection.
External audit efficiency
Complete audit trails allow auditors to rely on management's work and reduce sample sizes — directly lowering audit fees.
Audit Trail vs. Audit Log
An audit log is the raw system-generated record. An audit trail is the organized, sequential narrative those logs create — the story of what happened, reconstructed for review.
Audit Trail and Supervizor
Supervizor's Investigation & Reporting module automatically maintains a complete audit trail for every exception — who flagged it, who investigated, what was found, and how it was remediated. Audit trail management becomes an operational byproduct of continuous monitoring.
